Sleeping in Comfort while Pregnant

Jennifer Jordan

Sleeping comfortably during pregnancy, to many women, may be four words that don't belong in the same sentence. As if morning sickness weren't enough, the inability to rest with comfort adds a bit of night sickness to the mix. The tossing, the turning, the inability to find a position that suits you, if women could stay awake for nine month periods, this would be the time to do it.

However, sleeping comfortably during pregnancy isn't impossible: if it were, the human population would be in danger of going extinct. Taking a few words of advice to heart and to bed may just leave mothers-to-be sleeping peacefully.

Dress Wisely
Wearing comfortable clothes whenever you lie down – whether it's for 20 minutes or a long winter's nap – can aid the ability to rest with ease. An idea that was perhaps tailor -made for pregnancy, the concept of elastic clothing, should be utilized with frequency. Comfort can also be facilitated by wearing pajamas that are breathable and will regulate temperature: stay away from things that can fuel the fires of discomfort, such as pajamas made of wool.

The later the pregnancy, the more the act of simply turning over in a bed gains grounds of difficulty. Many women find that wearing silk or satin pajamas can aid in changing positions. Because these materials are slippery surfaces, many women find that sleeping in butter is the only thing more efficient.

Choose a Side
After the halfway mark of pregnancy, sleeping on your left side is the best choice. The left side is conducive to optimal blood flow – something that's important in keeping limbs from falling asleep. This is because the major blood vessels of your body - the aorta and the vena cava – are located at the right center of your back: sleeping on your left side doesn't interfere with these blood vessels, allowing them to do their job.

Use Pillows
Many women find that pillows – whether they are pillows specifically designed for pregnancy or just regular pillows – are extremely helpful in maintaining comfort. Some women find that placing a pillow between their legs right near their knees helps them sleep. Others find that using a full body pillow or a pregnancy wedge supports both their back and belly, allowing aches and pains to subside.

Sleeping during pregnancy is important. Not only is it essential to the health of the mother and the baby, but it gives the mother a chance to do something that they won't be able to do much once the baby actually arrives. While it is a challenge, sleeping in comfort while pregnant, it's not impossible. If the above tips don't work, then try this full proof plan: if you're pregnant and you can't sleep, simply blame your husband.
